I was born in Tallahassee, FL, to James Cotton, Sr., formerly of Midway, FL, and Josephine Nichols Hill of Tallahassee on April 6th. I received my education in the public schools of Tallahassee and graduated from Amos P. Godby High School in the class of 1984. I furthered my education at Florida A&M University, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Therapy and a Master’s Degree in Social Science Public Administration. Additionally, I pursued doctoral studies at Capella University and was honored to receive my PhD in Leadership and Educational Administration.
I began my career as a Respiratory Therapist at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital and worked in various nursing homes, traveling to Gadsden, Liberty, Calhoun, and other counties to provide care in rehabilitation and nursing home centers for ten years. I started my career in education in 1999 at Havana Middle School as a substitute teacher and was eventually hired by Mrs. Bettye P. Chatmon as a sixth-grade teacher. Since then, I have expanded my career in education and am currently employed at Montford Middle School in Leon County, where I serve as a teacher, 7th Grade Team Leader, School Union Representative, Extended Day Enrichment Manager, and Distinctive Daughters Sponsor. I have served on various committees and sponsored multiple clubs at the school level. Additionally, I have participated in numerous bargaining negotiations within the LCTA teachers’ union and at the district level for over 15 years. I am also a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Tau Theta Omega chapter in Quincy, Florida.
I have been united in matrimony with Daron V. Wood for 34 years. Together, we have welcomed two children, Kwan and Aysha Wood. I am the proud grandmother of four grandchildren who bring me great joy. I have six brothers and one sister, as well as another sister who preceded me in death. I was honored to be elected as the first Black female City Commissioner for District 1 in 2023 and serve proudly, with the hope of improving neighborhoods and the lives of our citizens. I am deeply grateful to the citizens who trust me to make decisions for our district, and I will always make decisions with their best interests in mind.
My spiritual journey began many years ago as a Baptist, and I later joined the Greater Tanner Chapel AME Church over 25 years ago under Reverend Tony O. Hannah. I love the Lord and work tirelessly in the church as a member, treasurer, steward, and choir member, always striving to make God proud. My hope for humanity is that we love one another as God loves us. My favorite scripture is Ephesians 3:1-8: “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven….” I am running for re-election because I believe I can help the City of Quincy thrive by improving infrastructure, economic development, affordable housing, community policing, and promoting government transparency.
Improving community and business partnerships in rural Florida requires a localized, collaborative approach that fosters trust, shares resources, and aligns economic goals with community values.
By leveraging specific state and federal funding programs designed to enhance public utilities, transportation, and broadband, thereby attracting private business investment. To help improve infrastructure development and job growth, I want the City of Quincy to extend their reach into Rural Infrastructure Fund (RIF), Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery (CDBG), Small County Outreach Program (SCOP), Rural Community Investment Programs (RCIP), and USDA Rural Development Loans/Grants.
It is essential that government officials promote government transparency by leveraging digital tools to overcome geographical barriers, strictly adhering to Florida's "Sunshine Law," and proactively sharing financial and meeting information. These measures help to build trust, as residents who watch or engage with local government are significantly more likely to trust their leaders
